North Norfolk

East Runton

Once a traditional fishing village, today a holiday hot spot. Despite its size, the village of East Runton boasts two pubs, a convenience store and a Greek restaurant! When the tide is out, vast stretches of sandy beach are revealed along with many rock pools to explore.

The beach

Next door to the seaside resort of Cromer, East Runton beach is a long sandy beach with sloping sandstone cliffs and countryside backdrop behind. A short ten-minute walk to Cromer’s famous Victorian pier, East Runton is an exceptionally popular spot for fossil hunters and geologists. The beach has the largest chalk reef in Europe and a wealth of fossils can be unearthed in the cliff face. In 1990 the fossilised remains of a wooly mammoth were found a little further along the coast in West Runton!

The village

A more child friendly beach than West Runton, it is accessible from the cliff top pay and display car park where you will also find public toilets and Glide Surf School. Overlooking the beach is the Surfers’ Memorial with a figure of a surfer as its weathervane.

The area

Within the village of East Runton itself there are local pubs and restaurants sure to whet your appetites. Will’s Plaice, a fish and chip shop is also a local favourite!

The town’s two pubs, The Fishing Boat and Bernie’s Bar, are both well reviewed. The Fishing Boat has a delightful beer garden, whilst Bernie’s has live music on a Saturday night.
There’s also a local convenience store in town.

If you head down the road to the more well-known Cromer, there’s an abundance of cafes, restaurants, shops and attractions. Terrific for a family day out!
